Sri Lanka have dropped Thilan Samaraweera from their squad for the Test series against Pakistan.
Samaraweera, a 68-Test veteran, was omitted for the final match of the recent series with Australia after scoring just 86 runs in four innings earlier in the series.
"Thilan will not come into the reckoning in our long-term plans," said chairman of selectors Duleep Mendis.
"We intend giving youngsters an opportunity while the seniors are around. He might be considered on a short-term basis."
The selectors are persisting with young batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, who opened the batting against Australia in the final Test in Colombo.
Sri Lanka play Pakistan in a three Test matches, starting on October 18 in the United Arab Emirates.
The 16-man squad includes uncapped batsman Dinesh Chandimal, wicketkeeper-batsman Kaushal Silva and seam bowler Nuwan Pradeep.
